2022 Volvo XC90 Might Be the Last Model to Use an Internal Combustion Engine

The largest SUV in Volvo’s lineup, XC90, is ready to receive some important updates for the next year. According to many reports, the upcoming 2022 Volvo XC90 may be the last version to use an internal combustion engine.

Håkan Samuelsson confirmed that at the last press conference. He said that the third-generation would be available with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain for the last time. It also said that the company’s plan is to redesign and move at least half of the brand’s vehicles to be fully-electric by 2025. The next-generation Volvo XC90 will be better than the predecessor, and we can expect it to arrive in late 2021 or 2022.

2022 Volvo XC90 Exterior Updates

The Swedish car company Volvo will make XC90 more adorable. At first glance, the forthcoming 2022 Volvo XC90 looks noticeably refreshed on the front. This model is known for its unique T-shaped LED daytime running lights, also called Thor’s Hammer. For 2022, the manufacturer refreshed the XC90s grille, and it uses slimmer headlights.

If this is not enough for you, the R-Design model looks more attractive. Generally, it gains a sportier styling thanks to a trim-specific grille, high-gloss black exterior accents. Unlike the regular model, the R-Design includes matte-silver mirror caps, and larger octagonal exhaust outlets. Like before, the standard on all models is alloy wheels sizing of 19 inches. However, the optional alternative is 22 inches wheels, plus summer performance tires for the R-Design models.

Same Dose of Luxury Inside

The new 2022 Volvo XC90 offers the same dose of luxury inside as the predecessor. This model offers 3-row/7-occupant seating as standard, with decent legroom and headroom behind. The third row offers comfort, and is best suited for kids. The base XC90 comes with simulated leather upholstery, while leather is available on the upper trims.

In the technology department, the Swedish carmaker has no rivals. The XC90 offers plenty of standard features. It includes a big 12.3 digital driver information display and a vertically oriented 9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Also, you’ll found inside quad-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, panoramic moonroof, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, and much more.

2022 Volvo XC90 Engine Specs

Under the hood, the 2022 Volvo XC90 will be once again powered by the same engines. The entry-level T5 comes with the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, producing 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. T6 also uses a 2.0-liter engine, but it extracts 316 horsepower. It comes with an all-wheel drive as standard and with average fuel consumption of 22 mpg.

The last engine comes with a plug-in hybrid arrangement. This system is available only on T8 models, and it adds an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery. The PHEV model’s total system output is a considerable 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. It can travel 18 miles and delivers EPA city/highway fuel economy of 55 MPGe/27 mpg combined.
