The all-new 2022 Jeep Commander has been confirmed, and its comeback will happen in the following year. From the latest official statement, the new SUV should be released firstly in the Latin American market. We’re not sure if this model will be available in the United States, but we know that China market will receive a much bigger version called Grand Commander.
Interestingly, we have some spy shots and the new Jeep Commander looks almost the same as the Jeep Compass. However, the main difference between them is that the Commander has a boxier shape. Actually, it’s riding on the FCA’s Small Wide platform that’s also underpinning the Renegade and Compass models.
2022 Jeep Commander Exterior
When it comes to design, the new 2022 Jeep Commander looks compact and stylish. Obviously, the latest Jeep Compass model inspires this SUV. First of all, it rolls on the FCA’s Small Wide platform that’s also underpinning the Compass and is slotted between Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models.
With a wheelbase that goes slightly under 111 inches, this model should definitively offer a more spacious cabin than the Compass. In terms of the styling, the first renderings reveal a typical Jeep design language. Of course, a couple of exclusive details are available, like a more attractive front fascia, somehow different but the same grille, and stylish headlights.
Roomy Cabin
On the inside, the overall quality of the new 2022 Jeep Commander will be at a high level. Unfortunately, there are no available renderings or even spy shots to confirm that. Actually, many reports indicate that the new Commander will host a very roomy three rows cabin, that should fit seven passengers.
However, we don’t know for sure if this model will come standard with two rows of seats, or the third row would be optional. Generally speaking, we should expect a little bit longer list of standard equipment and more tech goodies than we saw on the latest Grand Cherokee.
Under the Hood
Jeep recently revealed a plan to release exactly four electric vehicles and ten plug-in hybrids by 2022. Reportedly, the forthcoming 2022 Jeep Commander might use some of them. The closest possibility is an existing PHEV system that we saw on the latest Wrangler 4xe.
This model uses a plug-in hybrid system that consists of a powerful electric motor, a 17.3-kWh battery pack, and a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. Combine, this system delivers around 49 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) and 25 miles of electric-only driving range. Of course, we expect at least one more engine to be on the offer, as well.
Will Jeep Bring Back the Commander?
The answer is yes. The new unibody 2022 Jeep Commander was spied testing, and its design seems heavily based on the smaller Compass model. We don’t know for sure if this model will be available only in Latin America or it might also reach United States soil next year. \
Reportedly, North America could get an extended-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer, but this information is not yet official. The Commander’s exact prices and release date are not available at this point, but expect more news in coming months.
