2023 Rivian R1S: All You Need to Know About the New SUV

The 2023 Rivian R1S will reportedly hit stores next year. The seven-passenger sport-utility vehicle will go against Tesla Model X, which is the only electric rival that has a three-row of seats.

Interestingly, the new R1S shares many of its attributes with the popular R1T pickup. It uses the same mechanics, which includes the quad-motor setup and 128.9-kWh battery pack that is good for 316 miles of driving per charge. As far as we know, Rivian is starting off by delivering orders of the Launch Edition, while the entry-level Explore model is expected to join the lineup later.

2023 Rivian R1S Offers Futuristic and Eye-Catchy Design

The exterior of the 2023 Rivian R1S reminds us of the Range Rover and the Jeep Wagoneer. However, the R1S is obviously more unique than other models thanks to its futuristic and eye-catchy design. The off-road enthusiasts will like this SUV because it is carefully designed to ensure calm ride on any type of terrain.

The manufacturer used an adjustable suspension that allows for up to 14.9 inches of maximum ground clearance. It is also worth mentioning that this SUV has the ability to go 36 inches of wading depth. Some interesting paint options will be available, and we like all of them. As standard, the Rivian comes in Blue, while Compass Yellow that is more unique is optional.

Unique Interior

Just like the pickup R1T sibling, the 2023 Rivian R1S boasts the same beautifully designed cabin. However, unlike the pickup model, the SUV variant offers room for up to seven occupants. The cabin is modern, and it comes with contemporary styling, including fancy leather, wood trim, and two large displays.

The large horizontally mounted infotainment system is present, and you can easily use navigation, media, and climate controls. Unfortunately, like the pickup truck, the SUV version will not support Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto, unless they’re eventually added over-the-air.

2023 Rivian R1S Powertrain Specs

As we said, the forthcoming 2023 Rivian R1S shares its battery pack, powertrain, and much of its styling with its R1T pickup sibling. Thanks to a quad-motor setup, this SUV is able to produce 835 horsepower and to run from zero-to-60-mph in 3.0 seconds. It is also worth mentioning the R1S model has an electric motor at each wheel, providing all-wheel drive. However, a dual-motor version with all-wheel drive will also be available, and it will use a dual motor setup. According to Rivian, the entry-level model will develop more than 600 horsepower

Rivian will eventually offer three different battery packs, on which the First Edition will use a 128.9-kWh pack. We expect this battery to provide at least 316 miles, while smaller ones around 260. The R1S is able to tow more than 7700 pounds, and it has a payload capacity of 1800 pounds.

2023 Rivian R1S Price, Release Date

Considering the Launch Edition is already sold out, buyers will only be able to choose an Explore mode that costs $84.500, or more expensive Adventure starting at $90,000. We expect both mentioned models to go on sale next year.
