According to the latest reports, GM has an answer for the Jeep Wrangler. The 2022 GMC Jimmy is the company’s newest off-road SUV. It will ride on the same underpinnings as the GM’s mid-size pickup truck lineup.
Name “Jimmy” was used decades ago by the GM as a special version of the Chevy Blazer. Now, the company is planning to revive its name once again. Besides rivaling Wrangler, new Jimmy will also look to rival the arriving Ford Bronco.
2022 GMC Jimmy Offers Urban Design
The upcoming 2022 GMC Jimmy will be a classic off-roader. And it will look like that. The body-on-frame SUV will come with urban design and an aggressive approach. New Jimmy will ride on the GM’s mid-size pickup underpinnings. The same architecture underpins models such as GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado. Basically, Jimmy is a truck-based SUV.
Transforming a truck to an SUV became a thing over the past few years. New Camaro-inspired Trailblazer model could be an inspiration for the all-new Jimmy SUV. Thanks to its off-road characteristics we can expect ample ground clearance. Image Ford Raptor in an SUV variant. Well, the 2022 Jimmy will look similar. Aggressive styling, athletic stance, blacked-out features and off-road equipment are all available.
Interior Details
The all-new 2022 GMC Jimmy will surely look modern from the inside. However, the interior details are still not available. We can expect a comfortable cabin with plenty of room. Its platform suggests ample legroom. However, we still don’t know SUV’s dimensions. On top of that, this model could offer two or three rows of seats.
GMC will look to rival Wrangler and Bronco models. For that reason, we can expect similarly or the same body styles. The 2022 Jimmy will offer numerous trim levels. That clearly suggests a real level of luxury on the upper trim levels. Range-topping trim will offer leather upholstery, heated seats and plenty of premium stuff.
2022 GMC Jimmy Powertrain Options
Reliable sources are saying that GMC won’t be too creative with the engine options. The 2022 GMC Jimmy will use a well-known 3.6-liter V6. This powertrain is very similar to the Wrangler’s engine. This engine will produce around 310 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. The turbo-diesel engine is also a possibility.
If it happens, a 2.8-liter Duramax is the most likely candidate. This engine delivers 186 HP and 370 lb-ft of twist. This body-on-frame SUV could get its high-performance version in the future as well. This version will be similar to Colorado’s ZR2 variant. For now, this is just speculation.
Price and Release Date
The price of the 2022 GMC Jimmy will start at around $30,000. Upper trim levels will cost closer to the $40,000. This body-on-frame SUV will look to rival Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.
Despite Jeep’s higher price, the Wrangler is still a very popular model. Ford will surely make a huge splash with its comeback of the Bronco SUV. It will be interesting to see GM’s off-road SUV in the race. However, Jimmy will hit the dealerships in the last quarter of 2021.
