The all-new 2020 Tesla Model Y will represent a smaller version of the Tesla Model X. These two models will be very similar. However, some differences will set them apart, besides the dimensions. For the start, Model Y will ride on a unique platform. According to Tesla, Model Y will offer superb handling and astonishing mileage.
The maximum projected range is rated at 300 miles. We are yet to find out if such bold claims are true. Interestingly, not everything looks so perfect. For the start, constant delaying of the release date. Also, tight second-row and lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto might make you think twice.
Clean Design
The upcoming 2020 Tesla Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan. A compact crossover will offer a futuristic and sporty design. An iconic “falcon doors” could become the highlight of the exterior. However, this is just a possibility for Tesla, but not so likely. Windshields are similar to the Model X model, if not the same.
The hood adds perfect muscle lines and it holds a clean design. Model Y takes a wide and tall stance. The front fascia will look very unique and Model Y will ride on its own architecture. And while we wait for specific exterior details, side view cameras will surely replace traditional side mirrors.
Modern and Spacious Interior
Unlike Model X that offers seven seats, smaller Model Y will offer a room for five passengers. Interior looks minimalistic but on the other hand, visually almost the same as Model X. The 2020 Tesla Model Y comes with a wide 15-inch display. The cabin will offer plenty of room, which includes both headroom and legroom. Taller stance provides great headroom. However, due to low-mounted rear seats, taller persons might feel tight in the back.
Whatsoever, comfort shouldn’t be questioned. Cargo area will be impressive. Tesla claims a storage capacity of 66 cubic feet. That is better capacity in the compact crossover segment. The cabin will be futuristic and it will offer plenty of modern features and amenities. On the other hand, the infotainment system does not support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Acceleration, Driving Range, Charging
The 2020 Tesla Model Y comes with numerous powertrain configurations. For the start, standard battery pack comes with a rear-wheel-drive system. The standard output provides 230 miles of driving range. Large battery can increase the range to 300 miles. Also, standard output accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The larger battery is rated at 5.5 seconds. Adding an optional all-wheel-drive system improves the acceleration to 4.8 seconds.
However, the driving range will drop to 280 miles. Also, Model Y offers a special Performance model. This model will deploy a dual-motor pack. Thanks to that, the compact crossover will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. When it comes to the charger, Model Y will be more convenient than Model X. Tesla confirmed new and faster Supercharger. Charging is quicker which is especially handy on long road trips. However, exact charging details are still a mystery.
2020 Tesla Model Y Price and Release Date
Compact crossover won’t arrive this year. First predictions were obviously a failure. The 2020 Tesla Model Y will hit the markets later in 2020. Price is expected to start at $40,000 for the base model. The larger battery pack will cost up to $50,000. The all-wheel-drive system with a hot Performance model will be priced at $60,000.
