The upcoming 2020 Mazda CX-5 Diesel is finally official. Mazda launched the diesel variant at the 2019 New York Auto Show. This crossover will be available in the United States. While most of the model will remain unchanged, under the hood, a diesel powertrain is finally available. However, the diesel engine is available in the Signature AWD trim level.
Clearly, the company is ready to compete in a more expensive segment. For now, diesel variant comes with the standard all-wheel-drive configuration. Besides the mechanical changes, the exterior will undergo a minor facelift. The design is very attractive and the interior will be one of the most luxurious in the segment. On the other hand, we don’t expect drastic cabin changes.
Exterior and Interior Changes
The all-new 2020 Mazda CX-5 Diesel won’t depart from the gasoline model. However, the diesel variant comes with the Signature trim level that is more premium than the base model. Signature trim offers most of the features as standard. It adds different sorts of luxury both inside and out.
The 2020 model will get minor updates only. The Kodo design language is still easy to spot. The front end will get more chrome accents and some features are slightly unchanged. CX-5 crossover is still available in four exterior colors. Jet Black is standard, but you can opt for the optional Machine Gray Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl and Soul Red Crystal.
From the inside, CX-5 Diesel comes with a great level of comfort. Leather upholstery is standard in the Signature models. It is one of the most premium interiors in the segment, no doubt about it. Visibility is even better now and the center console is larger than before.
New Diesel Powertrain
After long waiting, the anticipated 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D turbodiesel engine is in the offer. This engine is available only in the Signature AWD trim level. Thanks to the twin turbocharger, a diesel engine will produce up to 168 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque.
All-wheel-drive setup is standard and this crossover will offer a smoother ride. The 2020 Mazda CX-5 Diesel will act quieter than the gasoline variant, especially at a higher speed.
AWD Fuel Economy
As we mentioned, only all-wheel-drive setup is in the offer. It is a well-known thing that the AWD system lowers the fuel economy rating. The 20220 Mazda CX-5 Diesel will deliver 27 mpg in the city, 30 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. If the front-wheel-drive diesel becomes available, it will surely deliver even better rating.
A non-turbo variant is producing 187 HP and 186 lb-ft of torque. It is rated at 24 mpg in the city, 30 on the highway and 26 mpg combined. That means the turbodiesel variant offers significantly more power and better mileage.
