The forthcoming 2020 Subaru Outback will mark the start of the fifth-generation. This SUV will introduce more significant changes and improvements. On the other hand, the 2020 Subaru Outback will also get some subtle changes, and 2020 will build on that. This mid-size SUV will arrive with the same styling but it will also gain some cues from the Viziv Tourer. New chassis is also happening and the Outback wagon-like SUV will ditch its six-cylinder engine.
An all-wheel-drive setup is available as Subaru is one of the most famous deployers of this system. The interior is modern and spacious and safety rating is great. The ride is quiet and handling is astonishing. Generally, if you are looking for a mid-size SUV with great efficiency, well-equipped interior, and modern exterior design, look no further.
2020 Subaru Outback will borrow some cues from the Viziv Tourer model
As we wrote, the 2020 Subaru Outback will mark the start of the new generation and the updates are very likely. However, don’t expect too much as the SUV’s proportions and dimensions are the same as before. Even the shape will remain. Furthermore, the overall styling didn’t change at all. However, some cues are taken from the Viziv Tourer model and those cues are visible. The front end will get slight revision such as new lines and creases. The front bumper will get minor tweaks as well. To the sides, wheelbase could be longer now and the rear end will stay the same.
However, the biggest change is for sure, a new platform. Subaru plans to install the new architecture on all of its next-generation vehicles. New chassis is stronger and it should reduce the noise and vibrations. The same platform underpins Impreza and Forester models and the feedback is more than positive for now. The 2019 model gets a new suspension and some additional exterior changes, and overall, the 2020 model will be the best-looking Outback so far.
2020 Subaru Outback interior changes
Sadly, the interior of the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback won’t get any upgrades. Everything from the layout to the design will stay the same. Even the features are unchanged. However, the interior reminds us of the Legacy’s interior and that is a good thing. Subaru offers astonishing materials inside the cabin, which includes wood, chrome, and leather.
However, most of those materials are optional on the base model and standard on upper trims. The Touring trim is one fine example, and this model will get new Java Brown leather seats. Furthermore, door panels and armrest will get the same type of upholstery. Ivory contrast stitching is notable and it provides darker look.
More piano-black inserts and woodgrain accents are completing the feel of luxury. Satellite navigation and heated steering wheel are standard on the Touring model. Outback can accommodate up to five persons over the two rows of seats. The second row folds in 60/40 setup and the cargo area is ample. Safety is another dominating category when it comes to Outback models.
Safety options
This mid-size SUV offers a long list of driver assistance and safety systems. Company’s new EyeSight suite will be optional and will include stuff such as lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. Adaptive headlights are in the offer too, just like the emergency braking and backup camera.
2020 Subaru Outback powertrain
The 2019 model will arrive with two engine option. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.6-liter six-cylinder choices are available. However, the 2020 Subaru Outback will ditch the six-cylinder unit. It means the 2.5-liter remains a standard choice.
It can produce up to 175 horses and 174 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy delivers 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The 2020 model will for sure get an optional drivetrain, but at this moment, there is no information about the new engine. However, latest rumors are saying a 2.4-liter unit could be taken from the Ascent model.
If it happens, 2020 Subaru Outback will get a 260 HP and 277 lb-ft of torque four-cylinder banger. Other reports are suggesting a 2.5-liter from the Forester model. On the other hand, a hybrid drivetrain is a very likely outcome for the new-gen Outback. Subaru admitted that the hybrid drivetrain is in the development right now. It should combine a standard engine with the electric motor and the overall output will jump for about 50 horsepower. Not to mention the fuel economy figures which should be astonishing.
2020 Subaru Outback price and release date
The forthcoming 2020 Subaru Outback will arrive in the summer next year. The price should be higher than the current model, for around $2,000. So, if the base model now cost around $27,500 the 2020 model should start around $29,500.
The 2020 Subaru Outback hybrid variant will cost almost $40,000. The prices are still affordable. Definitely not more affordable than the competitors such as Kia Sorento or Ford Edge. But have in mind that those models are not offering an all-wheel-drive configuration as standard.
