The new 2022 Ford Explorer is coming, and is ready to introduce some mild improvements. If you didn’t know, Explorer is one of the Ford’s best-selling vehicles. Basically, it dominates in the segment, and Blue Oval will make the new model more competitive for sure.
The seventh-generation will include some subtle changes, including a wider stance and better off-road capability. Also, we should expect more standard equipment inside and better materials. However, some departments will be unchanged, and when we say that, we primarily mean about the engines.
2022 Ford Explorer Exterior
The outside design of the 2022 Ford Explorer won’t change at all. Considering many gossips that the next generation will get a complete revamp, this won’t happen for the 2022 model. Instead, Blue Oval will make some mid-cycle refreshment, and the Explorer should be more competitive. First of all, we can expect a revised front fascia with a new grille shape and reshaped headlights as well.
The overall length remains, but the wheelbase is extended by 6.3 inches. Ford has also reduced front overhang, and Explorer now provides slightly higher ground clearance. Besides, the side profile will host some subtle changes, including more attractive wheels and a less sloping roof. Moreover, the bodywork on the back should be more impressive, thanks to revised taillights and a slightly bolder bumper.
Interior and Trim Features
The new 2022 Ford Explorer is the third row SUV that can accommodate comfortably seven passengers. However, higher trim levels have a pair of captain’s chairs and are limited to only six occupants. Besides, Ford claims that the entry-level Explorer is now much more equipped. This version features dual-zone climate control, Sync connectivity, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 safety suite. However, XLT is the most recommended trim that adds a leather-covered steering wheel and all-wheel drive.
The Explorer ST is also an excellent option for invested money. This trim comes with leather-covered sport bucket seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, Active Park Assist, and a heated sport-style steering wheel. On top of that, Platinum adds Tri-Diamond leather seat trim, a twin-panel moonroof and wood interior trim.
Hybrid is the last trim and the most expensive, featuring leather-trimmed seats, a 360-degree camera, a foot-operated hands-free power liftgate, and power front seats.
2022 Ford Explorer Powertrain Specs
Under the hood, the forthcoming 2022 Ford Explorer deploys the same potent engines as predecessor. Base, XLT, and Limited models are powered by the 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 300-hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is once again available, delivering 365 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque with the Platinum and 400 horses on the ST version.
Like before, the Explorer rides on a rear-wheel-drive platform, while all-wheel drive is still optional. Also, all models are available with a 10-speed automatic transmission. When properly equipped, the Explorer is capable of maximum tow 5600 pounds.
Hybrid Version
A hybrid version joined the Explorer lineup in 2020. This model features a 3.3-liter V-6 engine paired with an electric motor. Combined, it produces 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. Generally, this is the most efficient engine, with an estimated range of 500 miles.
2022 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price
From some early reports, the forthcoming 2022 Ford Explorer will be introduced in the summer of 2021. Most likely that the sales will start soon after its unveiling.
Considering small changes compared to the previous model, we think that price will remain the same. The current base model starts at $34,000, while the ST trim costs $54,740. The flagship Platinum model begins at $58,250, providing a great package of equipment. The last one and the most expensive is the hybrid model, which can reach $61,000 when fully optioned.
