Since the Volvo decided to revamp its whole lineup one model is still waiting for the refreshments. It is the 2020 Volvo XC40 that will roll out with the much better presence. The XC40 model is a compact crossover and it is a more affordable option than the XC60 and XC90 models. This small SUV is really premium and it rides on the company’s new CMA platform.
For sure, a lot of inspiration is taken from the larger XC90, the interior is well-equipped and the exterior looks gorgeous. Under the hood, numerous engine options, along with both front and all-wheel-drive setups. Overall, if you want a smaller SUV with the higher ride, look no further as the 2020 Volvo XC40 is the answer.
2020 Volvo XC40 exterior looks unique and elegant
It comes as no surprise that the 2020 Volvo XC40 will sport a newest Volvo’s design language. The same language is applied to the XC60 and XC90 SUVs. However, this crossover will feature a unique look. The upcoming model will look wider than before, especially the front end, with the shrunken front fascia. Famous “Thor’s hammer” LED units are available and the large grille sits in between the headlights. The bumper is all-new and it looks sporty.
Generally, the whole exterior design is stylish and of course, less rugged than the larger XC90. To the sides, quarter windows are slightly smaller and the 18-inch alloy wheels are standard. The rear end offers similar taillight design as the headlights and the tailgate is looking cleaner.
The rear bumper features nothing at all, and the red strips are adding the sense of sportiness at the back. While not that muscular as some of the rivals, the XC40 looks subtle and angular. A Pro package is available and it adds bending headlights with the adaptive shadow system. Moreover, 20-inch alloys are available too.
2020 Volvo XC40 interior gets the advanced digital instrument cluster
There is no disappointment with the interior of the all-new 2020 Volvo XC40. The Swedish carmaker did a great job, especially when it comes to the layout of the seats and controls. Unlike the XC90, the XC40 offers smaller features and more unique features. The dashboard isn’t that big and the center console is wider. The center stack holds a large 9.0-inch screen. The vents are slimmer and another 12.3-inch display is standard. The instrument cluster is all-digital and is standard. The base model didn’t get that much premium materials but the cabin still looks upscale.
The standard upholstery includes textile materials and vinyl is present as well. The infotainment system offers voice control, navigation, and real-time traffic info. More USB ports and the latest assistance features are in the offer too. Upper trims are available with the leather upholstery and aluminum dashboard. More safety equipment and more power-operated features are in the offer as well.
The Pro Package offers a power driver’s seat with heating and cooling options. The Xenium package includes panoramic sunroof, 360-degree parking camera and more safety and driver assistance aids.
Safety
The approaching 2020 Volvo XC40 will arrive with the great safety rating. Swedish carmaker paid special attention to the safety department and the result is astonishing. This compact crossover includes latest safety systems and multiple airbags. Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane mitigation are all in the offer. The XC40 also adds a pilot assist, a semi-autonomous drive system that assists with the steering.
2020 Volvo XC40 engine variants
Volvo will continue to replace all of the engines in its SUV lineup. The 2020 Volvo XC40 will also ride on a company’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This T3 unit can produce 155 HP and T4 engine up to 190 HP. There are also two diesel powertrains in the offer as well. The D3 type of engine burst 150 HP and D4 generates up to 190 HP.
All engines are available with the standard front-wheel drive and with the optional all-wheel-drive setups. The automatic transmission is available too, but we are yet to find out how many speeds will be in the offer.
Hybrid model
Volvo claims that the T8 hybrid drivetrain will be on the list, probably in 2020. Hybrid’s drivetrain specs are yet to be announced. The U.S. markets will get a T4 model with the all-wheel-drive configuration, while the rest of the lineup will become available later on.
2020 Volvo XC40 price and release date
The upcoming 2020 Volvo XC40 will cost around $33,500. That includes a Momentum trim with the T4 drivetrain. The T5 models with the AWD configuration will cost slightly higher, about $35,500. In the U.K. the gasoline engine models start at £28,000 and the T3 models at the £40,500.
The biggest rivals of the all-new 2020 Volvo XC40 are models such as BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Audi Q3. Generally, this compact crossover holds a unique design, an upscale interior and the lineup of efficient drivetrains, and the price seems fair. The price is below the price of it’s biggest rivals and the difference is really small.
